Episode 103: Huibo Hou
San Diego based, Huibo chooses the realm of Black and White Photography as her most focused creative outlet and the way she expresses herself visually through it puts her work in a realm that few others can reach in our opinion. Full of understated power, exquisitely refined compositional strength and a clean minimalist style her imagery is not only instantly impactful but holds the viewer for great lengths of time with its quiet emotion and mesmerising feel. Huibo is a virtuoso in her handling of light and the way she directs and controls the tonal distribution in her images to support her vision is nothing short of masterful. Her work is consistently awarded internationally for very good reason as you’ll see, and she’s a sought-after speaker and presenter for her thoughtful and well considered approach. The interview explores the full spectrum of her career, including the refreshing influence of a long hiatus from the camera and covers some of her very refined post-production approach. The interview was recorded just before the 100th episode, so you’ll notice the odd reference to that, but it will do nothing to detract from the depth and space given to this wonderful conversation with one of the most brilliant and talented photographers to be operating out of the USA today.
